The windshields that come off this hill almost never break here. They pick up a chip somewhere else, on the Saw Mill or the Thruway or a stretch of chewed-up avenue, and then they split at half past six on a cold morning when the defroster goes on full and the glass is still frozen from a night at the curb. By the time you see it, the crack has usually run far enough that filling it is no longer honest work, and we will tell you that instead of taking your money for a repair that will not hold.
What happens next is a proper strip and reset. Old glass out, cowl trim off, the pinch weld cut back and primed so the new bond has clean metal underneath it. The replacement pane is matched to your VIN beforehand, moldings and clips are new rather than salvaged, and if your car carries a lane-keep camera it gets recalibrated before it leaves. Then the car sits with us until the adhesive has done its job. We do not shave that time to free up the space, because the bond is what holds the glass in place if you ever hit anything.

There is one thing about a windshield job that matters more up here than almost anywhere in the city, and it is that the car should be reasonably level while the urethane sets. Nodine Hill does not offer much level ground. Streets climb hard off Nepperhan, cars sit nose-up or nose-down with the wheels cut into the curb, and a fresh bead of adhesive on a car pitched at that angle is not what anyone wants. So for this particular job we would usually rather you came down to Yonkers Avenue than have the van work at your curb, which is the opposite of what we say about door glass. The drive down Ashburton Avenue takes four minutes and avoids the tightest turns, and you get flat ground, a proper bench, and no risk of losing your spot for nothing.

A door pane sits in a channel and does not care much about the angle of the car. A windshield is bonded to the body with urethane that has to cure evenly under its own weight, and a steep slope works against that. On a moderate grade we will still come out. On the steeper Nodine Hill blocks we would rather have the car level on our floor.
