The hill behind downtown is where a lot of our regular work comes from, and the reason is parking. Cars sit on both sides of streets that climb hard, wheels cut into the curb, bumpers a hand's width apart. We fit the correct tempered pane, clean out every last cube, and test the window up and down before the car leaves.
Windshields off the hill tell a different story. Most of them start as a chip picked up somewhere else, on the Saw Mill or the Thruway, then split on the first hard cold morning because the car sits outside all night. If the break is smaller than a dollar bill and out of your sightline, thirty minutes of resin work at $60 to $100 is usually the end of it. If it has already run, a replacement runs in the $250 to $450 range for most cars and we can have you back up the hill the same afternoon.
Nodine Hill climbs straight up from Nepperhan Avenue behind the Getty Square blocks, and the grade is the whole character of the place. Streets run in a tight grid of narrow two-way roadways lined with two- and three-family houses, driveways are rare, and almost everyone parks at the curb on a slope. Ashburton Avenue carries the traffic along the northern edge and gives you the least painful way down toward Nepperhan, while the cross streets are steep enough that drivers turn the wheels into the curb out of habit. Delivery vans, contractor trucks and school buses all thread through the same width of pavement, and on a weekday afternoon a car coming downhill and a van coming up have to work out between them who backs off. Nobody drives fast up here, which is why almost all the damage we see is at a standstill.

Curb-parking on a grade does most of it. A car nosed in tight on a slope has no buffer, so doors, ladders, bicycles and trash cans all end up making contact with the side glass, and one solid knock is enough for a tempered pane. Winter adds the second cause: sand and salt are laid on heavily up here for good reason, and the same grit that stops your tires sliding gets flicked into windshields and rear glass by every car that spins a wheel pulling away from the curb. Then there is the freeze cycle. Cars parked outside all night go from cold soak to full defroster in a couple of minutes, and any chip already sitting in the glass takes that swing badly and runs into a crack you cannot fill.
Come down whichever cross street you normally use to Nepperhan Avenue, follow it toward the Square, then turn onto Yonkers Avenue and we are two blocks along at number 91. From most of the hill that is four minutes with the lights against you. Coming down Ashburton Avenue works just as well and avoids the tightest turns if you are driving a car with a window missing. Parking at the shop is straightforward, which is more than the hill offers.
