Dunwoodie sits where the fast roads and the big parking lots meet, and both leave their mark. A stone that would bounce harmlessly off your hood at twenty miles an hour on Ashburton Avenue punches a star into laminated glass at parkway pace, and the Cross County and the Saw Mill both deliver plenty of them, especially in the weeks after a freeze when the shoulders are covered in grit. Trucks running the avenue toward Central Park Avenue throw their own share. The parking lots supply the second category: acres of spaces, shopping carts, tailgates and doors, and quarter or door glass takes the hit. Hail and storm debris matter too, because there is far less tree and building cover out here than downtown, so a car parked in the open takes the weather squarely.
Get onto Yonkers Avenue and drive west toward Getty Square. We are at 91, on the left as you come down, a couple of blocks before the Square itself, and it is about eight minutes without a single turn worth worrying about. Coming off the Cross County or the Saw Mill, take the Yonkers Avenue exit and stay on it. There is space to leave the car with us while the glass goes in.
