The mature tree canopy is the first culprit up here. Big oaks and maples over the streets drop limbs, acorns and ice through the winter, and a heavy branch on a rear window or a sunroof is a replacement every time. The second is the parkway. The Bronx River Parkway has an older, narrower surface than the newer roads, and its shoulders throw grit at windshields all through the freeze-and-thaw months. Commuter lots contribute the rest: cars sitting unattended from dawn to dusk in the same rows, doors opening within inches of each other twice a day, and the occasional overnight break-in for whatever was left on a seat. Very little of it happens at speed, and almost all of it is preventable damage that nobody sees coming.
The simplest run is Tuckahoe Road west to Central Park Avenue, south to Yonkers Avenue, then west to number 91 near Getty Square, which is about fifteen minutes when the avenue behaves. The Bronx River Parkway south to the Cross County works too and is often quicker at rush hour.
