This is one of the higher parts of the city, and the hill shapes everything about keeping a car here. Driveways are cut into the slope, often steep enough that you back in rather than nose in, and the streets bend around the contour instead of running straight. Most homes have off-street parking, which spares the door glass the curbside abuse it takes further downtown, but it introduces its own hazards: garage door frames, retaining walls, and a reversing angle that puts a quarter window exactly where a fence post is waiting.

Runyon Heights occupies a hillside in the northeast of Yonkers, tucked between Tuckahoe Road and the Sprain Brook Parkway, with the Ridge Hill development and the golf course and reservoir land at Grassy Sprain a short distance away. It is mostly single-family houses on curving residential streets that climb and drop with the terrain, quieter than anywhere south of Tuckahoe Road, with driveways rather than curb-to-curb parking. The trade-off is that everything you need is a drive away, so cars go out and come back several times a day through the same couple of exits onto Tuckahoe Road. From there it is a minute to the Sprain Brook or a few more to Central Park Avenue, which puts a lot of local mileage onto fast roads. Winter is when the hill really asserts itself, because a street that is merely steep in July becomes a genuine decision in February.

Parkway commuting is the main source. The Sprain Brook and the Saw Mill both run through cuttings with stone shoulders, and the mix of grit, road salt and truck traffic through the winter is what puts the classic bull's-eye chip in a windshield somewhere above the wiper arc. Thirteen minutes is a fair estimate outside the school run. The Saw Mill River Parkway south is an alternative if the avenue is stacked up, but with damaged glass we would rather you stayed on surface streets.
