Downtown is the one corner of Yonkers where you can leave the car with us and walk back into your morning. Drivers come down off the Main Street blocks, in from Palisade Avenue, and out of the buildings above Larkin Plaza, drop the keys, and go do something useful while we work. If a crack has run past the wiper sweep, we pull the old windshield, scrape the pinch weld back to clean metal, lay fresh urethane and set the new glass square, then hold the car until the adhesive has had its safe drive-away time.
We are not only a windshield shop, and that matters more downtown than people expect. Cars park nose to tail on a grade here, so the calls we take from these blocks are as often a clipped quarter window, a vent pane cracked by someone dragging a bag past, or a back window that met a shopping cart in a lot. Getty Square is the knot where Main Street, South Broadway, Palisade Avenue and Nepperhan Avenue all arrive within a block of one another, with Bee-Line buses swinging through the middle of it from early morning on. Main Street drops steeply from the Square down to the Metro-North station at the river, so a lot of the driving here happens on a grade with a bus ahead of you and a delivery van sitting in the right lane. Two things break glass downtown, and neither of them is highway speed. The first is grit. There has been building work in and around the Square for years, and trucks pull sand and stone chips out of those sites onto the pavement, where buses and box trucks throw it at whatever is behind them. Winter is worse, because the sand spread on the Main Street hill sits in the gutter until spring. The second is simple proximity. Park cars six inches apart on an incline and a swung door, a bike handlebar or a cart rolling downhill eventually finds a side window, and tempered glass does not forgive a point strike. More door and quarter glass comes to our bench from these blocks than from anywhere else in the city.
From the middle of the Square, pick up Yonkers Avenue and head east. We are number 91, on your right inside the first couple of blocks, so it is a two-minute drive or roughly a ten-minute walk back if you would rather leave the car and collect it later. Coming up from the waterfront or the train, take Main Street to the Square and turn. Doors open at 8:30 on weekdays and 9 on Saturday, and a before-work drop-off is the normal routine for downtown regulars. If your car is boxed in on a narrow block, or the windshield is too far gone to move safely, the van comes to you for the same price.
